Timby's was an odd sort of ignorance. It was not that he had no education, it was that the education he had was on one occasion or another quite tragically undone. The result was that instead of communicating at a low level, he almost seemed to communicate at a high level - except that he was utterly and infuriatingly indecipherable.

The doctors had recommended everything from therapy to whaling off the coasts of Scotland, but Timby's idiosyncrasy persisted.
